Kitchen Painting Ideas

Elijah James asked:

Are you thinking about maybe re-painting your kitchen, but you’re not quite sure where to start? Never fear! I have all kinds of great kitchen painting ideas for you!

If you have a small kitchen, painting it a light color will often give the illusion of a larger room. Alternatively, if you have a really large kitchen and you’d like it to feel a bit smaller and cozier, painting one wall a darker color than the other walls will often do the trick. Also, when choosing what color paint to use, you may want to take into consideration your personality. For example, do bright colors put you in a great mood and make you feel happy? If so, you may want to use a bright, vivid shade of paint for your kitchen.

On the flip side, if brighter colors tend to stress you out, you will most likely want to go with softer, more neutral colors in your kitchen. One fun idea that you transform the look of your kitchen is utilizing stenciling. There are a wide variety of stencils out there to choose from. If you have a country theme in your kitchen, perhaps you might want to use a rooster stencil to make a border along the walls, which would really tie your theme together! If you have more of an Americana look in your kitchen, a painted on stencil border of an American flag would look wonderful!

Depending on what theme you have in your kitchen, the possibilities with stencils are pretty much endless. You can really have a lot of fun with this! Just as a side note, stencils often look best on solid colored walls. One easy technique that you may want to try is sponge painting. This would add a beautiful textured look to your walls and would really give your kitchen a unique look.

Another way to change the entire look of your kitchen is to paint your kitchen cabinets. The first step in undertaking this project is to ensure that your kitchen cabinets are extremely clean. The reason for this is if they’re not totally clean, you may end up trapping dirt underneath the paint. This would be bad because it could eventually lead to problems with peeling. Also, if you decide to do this, be sure to put tape over all of the hinges so that you don’t accidentally paint over them.

For the same reason, you will also want to remove any knobs or handles from your cabinets before you get started. Using a gloss paint on your cabinets is a good choice as it will allow sunlight to reflect off them, which will help to give your entire kitchen a much fresher feel. Another advantage of using gloss paint is that smudges can easily be wiped off. Also, in addition to repainting your kitchen cabinets, you may want to consider replacing the cabinet hardware with new fixtures. This would really give your cabinets a brand new look!
